On March 18th, 2021, the VVSOR awarded two prizes: the Jan Hemelrijk Award & the W.R. van Zwet Award. Rosanne Turner (Leiden University & CWI) and Michiel uit het Broek (University of Groningen) won the awards this year.

The Jan Hemelrijk Award is a prize for the best master’s thesis in statistics or operations research. The 2020 prize went to:

For her master thesis research on “Safe tests for 2×2 contingency tables and the Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel test” at the CWI & Leiden University. She was supervised by Prof. P.D. Grünwald.
The W.R. van Zwet Award is a prize awarded to an excellent Ph.D. in statistics or operations research. Michiel uit het Broek (University of Groningen) has won the award for his PhD thesis “Condition-based production and maintenance decisions”. He was supervised by Prof. R.H. Teunter, Dr. B. de Jonge and Dr. J. Veldman.

This year, there was an honorary mention, for Marc Nientker at the VU Amsterdam and his PhD thesis “On the stability of stochastic dynamic systems and their use in econometrics”. His supervisors were Prof. Dr. S. J. Koopman and Dr. F. Blasques.
