On Thursday, March 20, during the Annual Meeting of the VVS-OR, Malena Schmidt received the Hemelrijk award for her MSc-thesis titled “Heuristics for a facility location problem with a quadratic objective function”.

Quoting the laudatio of the jury, chaired by Ad Ridder: “The winning thesis covers a well-known topic in operations research, but with an additional interesting twist making it a hard problem. The methodology of the study is excellent, by first a thorough complexity analysis of the problem, followed by several novel heuristical solution techniques, and to conclude with potential relevant applications. All this was written in a nicely readable report.”
