CWI invites applications for two 4-year PhD and two 3-year postdoc positions at the CWI in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. These positions are fully funded by the ERC Advanced Grant FLEX (FLEXible Statistical Inference).

Current statistical methods rely on unrealistic assumptions about sample size, significance levels and loss functions – essentially these must all be known in advance. The project aims to develop new statistical theory that provides valid conclusions even if – as happens in practice – these are instead set post-hoc, dependent on the data in unknowable ways. A key tool is the e-value, a recently introduced robust alternative to both the p-value and the Bayes factor.
